Austin graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies, and Amber graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Psychology. For 6 years, they then led the student ministry at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham, NC, calling young people to know Christ and to boldly make Him known. As they faithfully taught God’s Word, prioritized corporate prayer, equipped people to boldly share the gospel, all the while making disciples on a personal level, God immensely blessed their ministry. In Luke 10:2, Jesus says, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” As they prayed this prayer, looking for opportunities to share the gospel with others, in 2020, God broke their hearts for New York City—one of the most influential cities in the world (along with London), filled with nearly 9 million people, yet is only 3% reached with the gospel. While numerous obstacles stood in their way to plant a church in Manhattan, NYC, God called them to go, and they believed wholeheartedly that He would make a way. And God certainly did! Interestingly, this 1% of college graduates goes on to be the next generation of leaders in the world in nearly every area of life—in education, business, government, and culture—giving them the nickname, “The Powerful Percent.” As you may know, New York City is known as the “Melting Pot” of America, because of its great diversity. But the truth is, not only are the nations represented in New York City, the future leaders of those nations—and our own nation—are also represented in New York City! We originally planned to reach a select few college campuses around our church in Manhattan, but over time, God has made it abundantly clear that He wants us to start a network as an extension of our church that reaches every single college and university in New York City with the gospel. We know that’s a big undertaking, but we believe that our God is bigger! After all, if God is for us, who can be against us? If God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also graciously give us all things now in Christ? In Acts 11:23, we read that Barnabas “came and saw the grace of God” and the work that God had recently accomplished in Antioch. Verse 23 says that Barnabas “was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose.” For the next year, both Barnabas and Paul “met with the church and taught a great many people” (v. 26), and “a great many people were added to the Lord” (v. 24). It goes without saying that the weekly demands of ministry are great. But if we’re not careful, the pressing matters that we are required to address at our churches each day will keep us from having intentional conversations as a leadership team about how we can disciple and equip our people to walk in the ways of Jesus “with steadfast purpose.” That’s where we come in!
